MIT Chiller

MIT - 2,000 Ton Chillers - Nos. 7 & 8
Cambridge, Massachusetts

MIT's campus and utility loads have grown substantially over the past few years. In February of 2003, Beacon Piping Company, Inc. was hired to procure and install two electric motor driven 2000-ton chillers for Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Each unit required the installation of associated piping, mechanical equipment and process lines. In addition, Beacon Piping subcontracted and supervised the installation of two 5KV switchgears and other electrical equipment.

Beacon Piping carefully scheduled the work of multiple trades as well as plant shut downs during the project. The new equipment is essential for the cooling of active labs campus classrooms and associated buildings. Beacon Piping remained flexible during the project to accommodate the schools unpredictable physical plant conditions. The coordination of mechanical and electrical tie-ins during installation became a significant element of the project.

The area of installation was extremely tight. It was necessary to rig the chillers into place and mount the motors in a specific way to accommodate the space restrictions.
